What is business about? You aren’t allowed to say money because that is the obvious answer.
Business will always be about making money, but it will always be about people, too.
Understanding that what we do in business centers around relationships. Relationships make or break us.
You often hear the expression, ” it is not what you do, but who you are doing it with.” I don’t know who said that,
but that is 100 percent truth, and also a challenge. We challenge you to really consider how your company values
relationships, and how you can benefit from understanding people more. Here are 3 things to think about when it comes
to making business about relationships.
Talking to the people you work with with a tone that says value and humility more than anything.
It is really hard to get people to listen to what you have to say if they feel like you aren’t someone who cares.
If we put the value of the person in front of the importance of what we have to say then we gain friendships in
the process of working with others.
Creating a company where you value people more than anything else sounds to good to be true at times. What about difficult
issues that need to be resolved? What about conflict? In business it can often feel like 90 percent problem solving, and 10 percent everything else that you need to get done. We challenge you to work with others in their strengths and weaknesses. Especially when we feel overwhelmed with stress and deadlines we still need to value the relationship in the midst of resolving conflict.
We will all have those times where were feel like our ideas are not going anywhere. We can also feel like we are not creative people, and only a select few know how to do that. We challenge you to create a culture of allowing others to express their ideas in a way that can only add to the solution. Business that becomes about working with the differences in others relates well to the outside clients that we work with.
Our daily responsibilities, and problems to solve will always be in front of us. Whether someone stays around for a short while, or possibly forever we want business to be about people. We challenge you to value those that are around you today, and those that will be around you tomorrow.
